CAREER

Let's talk about careers. The one you had before you became a mom. The one you have now that you're a mom. And the one you want just as soon as the kids are old enough that you can trust them not to kill themselves (or a sibling) or burn down the house when you leave them alone. Yes, Ladies, it's time to think about what you really one to be when you grow up.

First, let's dream a little. But let's dream with our eyes open and our feet on the ground. Let's figure out what we might want to be if all options are open. Yes, options are open even if you are no longer "college age." I personally know a woman who after a successful first career in science went to law school at age 41, received her JD at age 43 (doing a 3 year law school program in 2 years while working almost full time), and has had a successful legal career the twenty years since. I know another woman who became a medical doctor in her late 40s and is now happily practicing medicine in her 70s. Age will happen, even if we do nothing with the time. So, think about what you are good at. Think about what you want to be good at. And go for it.

If the kids are still small, take a course every now and then and test the waters. (Yes, you do have to prepare for a career, unless your Daddy is the CEO, and yes, you do have the time.) You're going to get old -- your after-baby weight should have convinced you of that. The kids are going to grow up -- it happens almost overnight. And then, you have to be you again. You'll have another 40 to 50 years to live after the kids leave home. You'll have another 25 years after the kids leave home before your spouse retires. There's only so much decorating channel that a woman can watch. You have the time now. You have the time ahead of you. You might as well be living that time in a career that you enjoy and one that pays you enough that you can live richly, with or without an employed spouse.
